Flip the Switch Hackathon

Powered by Switch AI

Co-hosted by DevTools Academy and WeMakeDevs

Right now your AI agent sits in your terminal, where only you can use it.

Take an AI agent you already use, such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, or Antigravity, connect it to Slack, Teams, Discord, and Telegram with Switch, and build a workflow where it gets real work done with your teammates.

The challenge

Turn your solo agent into a teammate

Build a workflow where an AI agent and the people in a team chat get a real task done together.

  • Problem

AI agents work alone. You have one in your terminal, your teammate has a different one in theirs, and your company might run a custom one on a server. None of them can see what the others did, so people end up copying and pasting between windows.

  • Shift

Switch connects those agents to the chat app your team already uses. Each agent shows up in a channel like any other teammate, and anyone can tag it with a task. The room keeps the history, the rules, the tasks, and the decisions, so nobody has to explain things twice.

  • Brief

Add at least one AI agent to a team chat using Switch, and build a workflow where the agent and the people in that chat get a real task done together. You can use an agent you already have.

Tracks & prizes

Four tracks, for builders and contributors alike. You can enter more than one, and Best Blog is open to everyone on top of them.

  • Track 01

    Best Business Workflow

Help people and AI agents get work done.

Build a practical workflow using Switch to help people and AI agents get work done. Open to technical and nontechnical participants, with any combination of people, agents, and rooms.

    Prize to be announced

  • Track 02

    Best Personal or Creative Workflow

  • Track 04

    Best Integration or Extension

Connect Switch to more of the world.

Build an integration or extension that makes Switch more useful by connecting new agents, tools, frameworks, or services.

    Prize to be announced

  • Side track

    Best Blog

Write the best blog post about your build.

Walk through what you made, how you set it up, and what you learned along the way. Enter it alongside a track or on its own.

Track 03: Best Core Contribution

Get assigned before you write code

  1. 01Browse the open issues labelled hackathon and pick one you want to solve.
  2. 02Comment on it, tag @amaudruz, and say in a line or two how you plan to solve it.
  3. 03Wait until you are assigned, then start. Read CONTRIBUTING.md first: it covers the dev setup and the one-time contributor agreement (CLA) you sign on your first pull request.
  4. 04Open your pull request and link the issue in its description with Closes #number.

Rules

  • Only issues labelled hackathon count for this track.
  • One person per issue. If it is already assigned, or someone asked for it first, pick another.
  • Work on one issue at a time. Ask for the next once your pull request for the current one is up.
  • A pull request for an issue that isn't assigned to you won't be judged.
  • Open your pull request between November 4 and November 7, 11:59 PM IST.
  • If an assigned issue sees no activity for 48 hours, it may be handed to someone else.
  • Low-effort pull requests, such as typo fixes, formatting, or unreviewed AI output, won't be judged.
  • A certificate for every project, win or not
  • Swag shipped to the top 20 #HowISwitch posts
  • Winning projects showcased across DevTools Academy and Switch channels

Judging

CriterionWeight
Use of SwitchIs Switch central to the project, and would it stop working without it?30%
Technical executionDoes it run, and could someone clone the repo and reproduce it?25%
Creativity and impactIs it a fresh idea that solves a problem a real team has?25%
Presentation and documentationDo the demo video and README make it clear what you built and how Switch is used?20%
  1. 01Every submission is reviewed, and a shortlist is put together.
  2. 02Finalists are judged by a joint panel from DevTools Academy, Switch, and WeMakeDevs.

Side tracks

  • Best Core Contribution: The 10 most useful, best-built pull requests.
  • Best Blog: Clarity, accuracy, and how much it helps a first-time Switch user.

What you submit

  • A public project repository
  • A short demo video of your workflow running
  • A README that explains how you used Switch: which agents you connected, how the channel is set up, and how to run it
  • Optional: a blog post about the build, which also enters you in Best Blog

Get started

You don’t need any Switch experience. Follow these steps to go from an empty machine to a working room.

  1. 01Install SwitchDownload Switch Console and run Switch on your machine with Docker. It comes with Mattermost, so you need no company workspace.
  2. 02Connect your first agentClaude Code, Codex, and OpenCode work out of the box. Custom agents join through the agent protocol.
  3. 03Create a roomA room keeps the history, rules, tasks, and decisions that people and agents share.
  4. 04Build your workflow and submitFollow the payments room example from an empty channel to a working room, then submit your repo, demo video, and README.

Let an agent walk you through it

The Switch docs are served over MCP. Connect your coding agent and ask it “How do I get started with Switch?”

  • Claude Code

  • Codex

Meet Switch

Switch is the open-source layer that brings any AI agent into the chat tools a team already uses, where people and agents share rooms, context, and tasks.

  • Any agent, any model, your stack

Use the agents, models, and frameworks you choose, with no lock-in to a single AI ecosystem.

  • Bring what you've already built

Connect existing agents built with Claude Code, Codex, OpenAI, Google ADK, LangChain, MCP/HTTP, and more. Nothing to migrate and nothing to rebuild.

  • Agents where work already happens

Agents join shared rooms in Slack, Teams, Mattermost, and Discord, so nobody has to move into another standalone AI interface.

  • Persistent, shared context

Rooms keep history, rules, tasks, and decisions, so people and agents carry on across sessions instead of starting from zero.

  • Open source and self-hostable

Start in minutes, extend Switch for your own stack, and stay in control of how and where it runs.

As the agent ecosystem fragments, a company shouldn't have to bet on a single vendor, model, or harness. Switch is the open collaboration layer that lets a team choose what works and change as the market changes.

Switch ships no agents and no models, and it doesn't replace your chat app. You keep the tools you already run, and Switch connects them.

Share your build

Built something with Switch? Share it on social media with #HowISwitch: the top 20 posts get swag shipped to them. A blog post about your build also enters you in Best Blog.

Yes. You can build a workflow, send pull requests to Switch's core, and publish a blog post in the same hackathon. Best Blog is open on top of any track.
No. Switch is open source and free to self-host, including on your own laptop. You bring your own AI agent, so you need a subscription or an API key for the one you use.
Switch Console (the desktop app), Docker to run Switch on your machine, and an AI coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode. The quickstart takes about ten minutes. Console runs on macOS, with Windows and Linux builds in early access.
No. When you run Switch on your own machine it comes with Mattermost, a free chat app, so you can build and record your demo without a company workspace. Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, and Telegram can be connected whenever you want.
Any of them. Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode work out of the box through Switch Console, and custom agents built with LangChain, Google ADK, OpenAI, or anything else join through the agent protocol.
Yes. Existing agents, libraries, and templates are fine. The Switch setup and the workflow your agents run need to be built during the hackathon.
Yes. You should understand what you submit and be able to explain how it works.
